Summary

The Lost Boys say that Peter Pan went back to England because of Wendy Darling, but Wendy is just an old life he left behind。 Neverland is his real home。 So when Peter returns to it after ten years in the real world, he’s surprised to find a Neverland that no longer seems to need him。

The only person who truly missed Peter is Captain James Hook, who is delighted to have his old rival back。 But when a new war ignites between the Lost Boys and Hook’s pirates, the ensuing bloodshed becomes all too real – and Peter’s rivalry with Hook starts to blur into something far more complicated, sensual, and deadly。

3。5 starsit was short but sweet。 peter was a little too childish sometimes but i guess that was his whole character arc。 i loved all of the different tropes。 especially james being a fashion connoisseur。 also peter realizing he can be the same boy in the body he was born in。

Sounds amazing, right? But, the thing is, both the start they're both kind of。。。 uneventful(? Not that they're not interesting or boring, it's just that nothing really happens until the very end, and the events in the middle felt flat, unnecesary, forgettable and really random。 As I said before, it's like the author didn't really know what to do with the middle because he only had planned the start and end, so it felt forced to me, like I didn't know what direction the story was going to take, because there's。。。 none。I think that's basically the thing that annoyed me the most, but also the fact that the charcters except for Peter and Hook, felt really 2 dimensional。 The reason for that is explained later to us but it still wasn't enough for me, because damn, I LOVE seeing character development。Both books are still good though, and I loved the end of both stories。 But Cinderella is better in my opinion。Nevermind, I still think the idea was great, I love the cover and the trans rep (which, in my opinion, is still not as frequent as other representations even in queer literature)。 (6º y último libro del mes del orgullo 🌈😭) 。。。more

If you'd told me at the beginning of this year that a book about Peter Pan was going to give me so many feelings I'd end up crying- twice I probably wouldn't have believed you。But, oh boy。 This one got me。 It hit all the right notes, and I love the way it dealt with some serious issues in a way that both ripped my heart out and made me so proud of Peter and James。 It's such an interesting, believable (I know, but you'll understand if you read it) retelling of the Pan story。 I loved it。 Hook and If you'd told me at the beginning of this year that a book about Peter Pan was going to give me so many feelings I'd end up crying- twice I probably wouldn't have believed you。But, oh boy。 This one got me。 It hit all the right notes, and I love the way it dealt with some serious issues in a way that both ripped my heart out and made me so proud of Peter and James。 It's such an interesting, believable (I know, but you'll understand if you read it) retelling of the Pan story。 I loved it。 Hook and Pan's relationship is just so。。。 so。 They're precious to me。 I devoured this in, like, three hours。 Did not want to put it down。This one is an all-time favorite now, for sure。 。。。more

Peter Darling is an absolutely enchanting take on the tale of Peter Pan。 This one started out just a little slow for me (the only thing keeping this from five stars), but other than that is a perfect book。 So glad they did a reprint of this so more people can get their hands on this beautiful adaptation。

I don't know why, but I went into this book thinking it was going to be a kind of hot-n-heavy Hook/Pan "Naughty men of Neverland" kind of text。 。 。 and am still wondering why I thought that。 Instead it is a kind of exploration of the need for fantasy realms until you find your people, and a sorta slow slow burn。 It is also a criticism of the toxic-aggressive masculinity promoted in children's books such as Barrie's Pan。 Chant does provide some lovely lovely prose for Hook。Sample:"Hook was starin I don't know why, but I went into this book thinking it was going to be a kind of hot-n-heavy Hook/Pan "Naughty men of Neverland" kind of text。 。 。 and am still wondering why I thought that。 Instead it is a kind of exploration of the need for fantasy realms until you find your people, and a sorta slow slow burn。 It is also a criticism of the toxic-aggressive masculinity promoted in children's books such as Barrie's Pan。 Chant does provide some lovely lovely prose for Hook。Sample:"Hook was staring at the place where Samuel had stood with an expression of bewilderment。 Peter could have stuck him with the point of his sword, he was sure, before Hokk wouldn't even thought to react。 But he was watching the procession of emotions that marched across Hook's face, from disappointment to sorrow to anger and back。 All around them the boys and the pirates were shouting at each other, battling over stolen weapons, but their two captains were silent and still。"Then Hook grunted and stood straight, and Peter saw him quickly packing away each feeling like a host stuffing clutter into the closets before guests could arrive。 When at last he turned to Peter, there was nothing in his face but contempt。" 。。。more

I was so excited to read this book and it didn’t disappoint! This reinterpretation of the Peter Pan story is so original and amazingly written。 Somehow, the connection between Peter and Hook makes sense and it develops at the perfect pace。 I love that the story focus more on how well they understand each other than on the romantic aspect of their relationship。100% recommend!

Soooo highly recommended。 What author Austin Chant has done magnificently is bring three dimensions to a story that could have been a simple “Pan and Hook get together” fic。 Each scene we learn more; we peer deeper into the characters; we discover more layers to the world。 。I’m torn about what to say here, since part of my joy in this was discovering these layers。。。in turning each corner to see something new。 。Another big part of the joy was watching two people grow closer and closer as they get Soooo highly recommended。 What author Austin Chant has done magnificently is bring three dimensions to a story that could have been a simple “Pan and Hook get together” fic。 Each scene we learn more; we peer deeper into the characters; we discover more layers to the world。 。I’m torn about what to say here, since part of my joy in this was discovering these layers。。。in turning each corner to see something new。 。Another big part of the joy was watching two people grow closer and closer as they get to know each other and see each other for who they are, including in the final chapter。 。It’s such a wonderful tale of finding joy and the resolution is just beautiful。 Trans joy, indeed。。This is going on my comfort-reads list; will definitely read again。 Thanks to Talia Hibbert for recommending it first; I’m so glad it’s back in print! 。 。。。more

Thoroughly enjoyed this。 I really loved the feeling of unreality and magic, and the flashbacks to Peter's life outside of Neverland。 There's a lot of themes that I really enjoy in the Peter Pan character/story, but I never really considered reading more variations of the story。 Now I'm off to watch Peter Pan (2003) because I could not stop thinking about it。 Thoroughly enjoyed this。 I really loved the feeling of unreality and magic, and the flashbacks to Peter's life outside of Neverland。 There's a lot of themes that I really enjoy in the Peter Pan character/story, but I never really considered reading more variations of the story。 Now I'm off to watch Peter Pan (2003) because I could not stop thinking about it。 。。。more

Peter Pan returns to Neverland, coming to terms with being a trans boy in bad old England。 He starts out as a cruel boy and experiences some character growth … through the magic of Hook's pretty eyes? I don't know, y'all。If you're charitable, this is an interesting take on toxic masculinity among transmasculine people, and then it is interesting as a concept – but doesn't do all that much with it。 The character growth is by virtue of the plot demanding it and wishful thinking, and the previously Peter Pan returns to Neverland, coming to terms with being a trans boy in bad old England。 He starts out as a cruel boy and experiences some character growth … through the magic of Hook's pretty eyes? When I read Caroline's Heart earlier this year, I was blown away: Austin Chant’s paranormal western is hauntingly beautiful, and easily my favorite novella in the romance genre。 But, when I looked for this talented author’s backlist, I was sad to see that their other published work, Coffee Boy and Peter Darling, were unavailable…until now! Chant has reissued their earlier work, and I immediately jumped at the chance to get my hands on this gorgeous new edition of their Peter Pan retelling。 Unsurprisingly, the contents were as enchanting as the cover design! How much do I love Peter Darling? Let me count the ways: 1。 Peter Darling is the consummate enemies-to-lovers romance。 I’m a huge fan of this trope, but I think it’s often misunderstood, which isn’t the case here。 When we first encounter Peter in Neverland, he’s itching for a fight, partly because he’s a combative young man who is seeking a pleasurably familiar outlet and partly because he’s a traumatized person who has adjusted to a life that has forced him to fight endlessly for himself。 For Peter, fighting is fun and it’s survival, and like villains before and after him, Captain Hook gives Peter a safe place to direct that energy and pain。 But, over the course of the novel, Chant also wisely investigates how empty and unfulfilling it can be to process uncomfortable emotions through violence, which calls out toxically masculine narratives even as it empathizes with the characters at the center of those stories。 Eventually, as Peter and Hook’s romance evolves, we also get to see that deliciously blurry boundary between pleasurable fighting and antagonistic desire that is the bedrock of this tricky-to-write trope。 2。 Peter and Hook both grow over the course of the book。 In traditionally published romance, it often feels as if the main characters begin and end the novel in the exact same psychological space。 They’re usually just as good in the beginning as they are in the end, which isn’t the case here。 When this story opens, both Peter and Hook exist as anti-heroes。 Or, it might be more accurate to say that they’re full of relatable human flaws: Peter is arrogant, combative, and feels entitled to the Lost Boys’ hero-worship while Hook is vulgar, materialistic, and threatens his crew for entertainment。 They’re also both actively running towards one another to evade the uncomfortable feelings that might otherwise overwhelm them。 And, over the course of the narrative, they grow into maturity, vulnerability, and compassion。 In their relationship with each other, they find the strength to confront hardship and embrace joy, and that journey makes their HEA cathartic and hard-won。 3。 The speculative world building is impactful。 Peter Darling isn’t a fantasy that is built on a superficial desire for stylish “vibes” nor does it prematurely lay all its structural cards on the table, which was a huge relief。 Instead, the mechanics of this world are given to us incrementally, and with each new reveal, this story grows more dimensional and complex。 Everything is not as it seems! But as Peter, Hook, and the reader burrow into Neverland, the themes of this book become richer and more brilliantly devastating。 4。 Its themes are universal。 Beyond the skillfully realized handling of genre tropes, the clear arc of personal growth and relationship development, and the effective use of world building, this novella contains themes that speak to a wide swathe of people。 Chant captures the three-steps-forward-one-step-back process of growing up, the ennui and frustration of clinging to something once we’ve outgrown it, and the life-saving role of fantasy and play for anyone who has been invalidated or traumatized by the “real” world。 There are also a ton of quieter moments that are just as relatable, like Peter’s uncertainty around sexuality。 The text doesn’t dwell unnecessarily on his inexperience or speechify about the fetishization of virginity more broadly – it simply honors his emotional courage and vulnerability in the moment, which is a perspective I wish more romances would emulate。 5。 Its themes are specific。 It would be remiss of me not to mention how evocatively Chant writes from a trans perspective。 And listen: I’m not trans, so I’m in no position to give Peter Darling a seal of approval for its trans-ness or speak to its handling of potentially triggering content。 What I can tell you is that I felt that this novella was specifically and powerfully empathetic towards a lived experience that isn’t as visible in the genre as it ought to be。 Beyond Penny Aimes’ upcoming debut from Avon’s Carina Press, For the Love of April French, I cannot name a single adult trans romance from a traditional publisher, and that’s an ongoing failure of this genre。 To add insult to injury, the trans characters we do see are almost uniformly presented as one-dimensional victims, villains, or gracious beneficiaries of cis tolerance。 Here, the trans character is centered and his story contains themes particular to his experience, which I loved。 Side note: I’ve never read J。 M。 Barrie’s original work, nor am I a big Peter Pan fan more generally。 The closest I’ve gotten to this novella’s source material is a random British Christmas pantomime with Henry Winkler as Hook, and the Disney film from 1953, which again I wasn’t really into as a kid…so, I have no idea how this reads as a sequel/re-telling, or in the continuum of Pan fandom。 I didn’t ever feel as if I was missing anything as I was reading, but I thought I’d mention it, if you are interested for those reasons。 I would encourage any romance reader to try this sensitively written, adventurous, and heartwarming novella! It has definitely joined Caroline's Heart as one of my all time favorites。 。。。more

Trans self help book? Let's hunt。 All I found were cis women whining but Lo and Behold, Peter Darling! Was a bit sceptical at first but fuck it, it was like eight quid on amazon。 Managed to trick my dad on the 12th of June to buy me a tranny, mlm fan fiction I am legend Love Wins。 Came the day after, and in her #preparation I finished P&tP in the morning and The Hobbit in the evening。 Started the read the next day in Miss B's office, getting about halfway through。 Took photos of certain passages and sent to Max, which I'll relay after the brief starting review。 Continued later on in the shed, enduring the uncomfortable 'intimate' scene, then finished in the evening in bed。Immediate thoughts。The first half felt like a whole (brilliant) book in itself, and I was intrigued to see where it was going。 The romance between Hook and Pan made me heavily uncomfortable, with references to the former's age and the latters youth。 I was in the shed when I read the scene and I am forever grateful I wasn't around anyone because my word vomit was just unbearable。 I tried so hard to picture James as OUaT's Hook but the descriptions made it so difficult man, I was peeved。 The fairies were so。 Fucking。 Cool。 That shit SLAPPED。 The commune and the tree thing description slapped hard I ate that fairy dust up。 Little insect fuckers that speak through chimes (Tinkerbell movie series I see you) man that was ace。 Speaking of the movies, I liked the wee reference to floating like a dandelion when Peter was coming down to the frozen boat。 The book cover is gonna get a section because oh yes。 Oh lordy me like。 Really appreciated the way the trans side was handled。 Especially with constantly referring to Pan as he/him, not using that bullshit excuse of 'when he was a girl' that shit boils my toenails。 The flashbacks hit so hard but were done so well。 Also, James not commenting on it at the end? Fantastic。 Amazing。 That ending really saved the second part for me but that's a different paragraph。 Shit what else。 Oh yeah, everyone and everything is fake reveal fucking shocked me。 Thought it was gonna be a 'Everyone and everything is queer' situation but nope。 Y'all fuckers imagined。 And honestly? Love it。 RIP in peace to my homeboys Tink, Samuel and Slighty。 Really respected the balls to actually have consequences, killing and bloodshed and all that shit really pulled me in and actually made me care。 Never did I feel like the writing was filler or unnecessary apart from the scene, which is a nice change to the bloody five page mountain descriptions I've had to sit through。"We'll have to go foraging," Peter said。 "I saw some edible wildflowers in your yard。 I'm almost sure the mushrooms by the river aren't poisonous。"James paused with his mouth open, then shut it and cleared his throat, looking as if he were trying very hard not to smile。"Alternatively," he said, "there's a town a few miles away where we could buy bacon and eggs。""Come now, Captain," Peter said。 "That's hardly the spirit of the thing。"I appreciated feeling smart at the call backs to earlier quotes, the link between a fairies life and their childs youth, the balls to kill off characters, Tinkerbell's whole shtick, the confusion of real and fake, the kind realism of the trans experience, the book design/hold。Book design。She holds beautifully darling。 Feels so soft but also,, like human skin? I don't know Miss B said that。Now。 Is the pink to blue ombre a nod to the trans flag or is it literally just the sky and sea I am dumb。The little fairy in the D! The sword underlining 'Darling'! The window sill, the kraken and Peter attacking it, the Jolly Roger and the skull and cross bones。 I'm in love the drawings are fantastic。Messages sent to Max。"starting off awkward and strong in the prologue, i admire the boldness" - In reference to Hook admiring Samuel's arse in page-fucking-two。( general excitement over Tinkerbell, Tink holding onto buttons, Tink sitting in hair, Tink sunning herself, Tink's insect body )"oh deary deary me its my dreams come to page" - in reference to Pan admiring his low voice and flat chest。"also theory! all lost boys on the island are trans because ernest said he felt the same way peter did""this made me,,, this made me feel sumting" - pg 57"If this our last farewell, may we see each other agin in Hell HOW COOL WAS THAT LINE HELL FUVKING YEAH"( excitement over mermaids because Max likes them, and sadness over Tink's death。 it shocked me but i cant remember if i choked up or not。 )"i thought i was so fucking smart linking this even though it was so obviously laid out"photo of a piece of paper on pg 97paper read。 ""All children lost their fairies when they grew up" The death of Slighty and the poison 'ruined' Peter's 'game'。 Killing his innocence (aka) childhood (aka) Tinkerbell""C O O O O L L L INTENSE AS HELL" - pg 116"these bits freaked me out also COOL?? YES THIS IS AMAZING HOOK AND PETER ARE THE ONLY REAL ONES, EXPKAINS WHY ONLY THEY HAD FAIRIES" - pgs 130 to 133"idk i just thought this was funny austin made a point throughout the book (first half i am ONLY HALFWAY) to show how dramatic hook is and how much he loves his clothes" - pg 174"would like to say! i was kinda confused whether the faires were real bcs hook said pan could just make another tink, buuut he also said that this pirate guy realised the faires were the only real thing inhabiting the island or sumthing""ON THIS PIRATE GUY (and ernest) hook said he thinks both of them had something real in them,,, are some of the fake people made fake but become real??? or are they pulled from the real world?? idk" edit。 holy shit he was realThe Romance。I am assuming Peter is twenty due to text cues。 Sure, fine。 He's (barley) of age。 And yes time is different in Neverland。 But come on。 Hook's got to be like thirty at least, which yeah, sure doesn't sound bad - until you realise that !!he was an adult when Peter was a child, and furthermore knew him as a child!! Can I get a Elizabeth Swan - James Norrington comparison in the chat。That scene also felt sort of out of the blue。 Sure they had their soft, raw moments but to go straight to。。。 delicate areas, I think was the phrase used I can't remember I was nervous laughing too much。 Who want's to bet some freaky fairies were watching from the tree line I swear。 Like I said earlier, the last paragraph saved it for me。 The subtle, gentle easiness and lack of judgement was such a sweet ending for those two。 TODAY'S MILLION DOLLAR QUESTIONS AREWhen the fuck is this story set, how the fuck old is everyone, and why the fuck was Peter able to go through Hook's。。。 portal?15。6。21 edit。 Just found the photo I took of a #MISPRINT!! God, I love me a good typo。OK so page 214, "but not could not see(。。。)" It's a beautiful misprint fellas we really lucked out today。 。。。more

I loved the dynamic between Peter Pan and Captain Hook, although I wish it was a bit more fleshed out… Also the Lost Boys seemed so much like side characters only there for show, at some point they did something and there was no reaction from Peter despite what I thought would be anger and hurt and disbelief because huh??? Also I hope Earnest gets the life he wants and lowkey wish we knew what happened to him。 But these are just ramblings of someone who just finished reading, an amazing renditio I loved the dynamic between Peter Pan and Captain Hook, although I wish it was a bit more fleshed out… Also the Lost Boys seemed so much like side characters only there for show, at some point they did something and there was no reaction from Peter despite what I thought would be anger and hurt and disbelief because huh??? Holy shit this was fantastic。 An incredible, transformative take on the story of Peter Pan while being heartrendingly true to the source material -- I've always loved Peter Pan for its discussion of gender roles, the constructed nature of childhood, the sociopathy of boyness。。。 and this book took on those same themes and continued the conversation without a hitch。 Without apologies or excuses, just a conscientious (while un-self-conscious) story being told from a reclaimed position of wonder -- Holy shit this was fantastic。 An incredible, transformative take on the story of Peter Pan while being heartrendingly true to the source material -- I've always loved Peter Pan for its discussion of gender roles, the constructed nature of childhood, the sociopathy of boyness。。。 and this book took on those same themes and continued the conversation without a hitch。 Without apologies or excuses, just a conscientious (while un-self-conscious) story being told from a reclaimed position of wonder -- Neverland is queer af and always has been。 Childhood, like gender, like piracy, can be sources of strength and adventure and self-discovery。。。 but if you let them define you, they can also be traps。 Seriously, this is brilliant。Now, I am not a huge fan of romance, so I can't speak to that aspect of this book other than to say that I wasn't (as I often am) squicked out or bored enough by any of it to skip entire paragraphs。 The romance was woven into the story and worldbuilding seamlessly, and let me tell you the worldbuilding is too good for words。 The kraken, the fairies, ohmygod this was so good。Why isn't everyone shouting about this book? How is this not a bestseller? Who do I talk to about this? 。。。more
